Ever heard of an Egg Drop? Well, It's a contest where the students build a contraption to catch a raw egg dropped from a high elevation. Our school did one this year and dropped the eggs off the library roof.
The testing Process:
We encouraged The Daughter to come up with a design or two on her own, then we helped her test them out. It was fun to talk about why things worked or didn't work and watch her come up with solutions as issues came up.
The Little Man had to get in on the egg dropping too.
Several eggs didn't make it. Oops!
The final design:
Grocery bags in the bottom of the box, then bubble wrap, then crumbled up paper, and topped with several inches of packing peanuts. To hold everything in place she covered the open topped box with tissue paper.

We kept telling Kenny that his plan wasn't going to work; mud in a small tupperware container. He wouldn't listen to our ideas and went forward with it anyway. To our surprise, the egg didn't break!
I was blown away by the amount of projects that worked...not sure how they did either.
I'm so glad that the egg drop was so much fun. My girls thought of what they wanted to do and then decided that they didn't want to make anything, but they did like watching. =)
